HISTORY and
DEVELOPMENT
thedramaloft
concept rose from the ashes of the
events of September 11th, 2001. When class was disrupted
by the attacks on the World Trade Center, a group of artists from
the Raul Julia Training Unit at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre
(PRTT) found themselves unable to continue, finding the weight of
their emotions crippling. Under the leadership of their teaching
associate, G. Beaudin, and by using the Affinity Exercise developed
by the Living Theater, the students were able to harness the
personal chaos of those events. Beaudin and the artists pieced
together the individual stories to conceptualize and create
Ground Zero/Zona Cero. What began as a fifteen-minute
experimental theatre piece, Ground Zero/Zona Cero evolved
into a riveting seventy-minute bi-lingual performance exploring the
events and aftermath of 9/11.
As awareness of the project spread, artists of varied
backgrounds and talents volunteered their time and energy to further
develop Ground Zero/Zona Cero. The group went on to perform
in at three locations in Manhattan and finally in the Hamptons in
the summer of 2002. In the fall of 2002, G. Beaudin teamed up with
actor Joshua Marmer and singer/actor Dirk Weiler to establish a
permanent outlet for artists to develop their talents and express
themselves in a professional capacity.
